Fuel Storage
The smaller fuel canisters and larger refueling tanks must be stored in a different complex or building so as to be more safe. To add more safety, all areas in the vicinity must have "No Smoking" signs are prominently displayed. Ideally, the fuel tanks should be stored in a safe enclosure that can only be accessed by authorized employees. It is very essential for the operator's safety, as well as everybody they work with, that these safety regulations are strictly complied with.
To be protected from vehicle impact, the fuel enclosure itself needs to be protected. This task could utilize retraining systems such as concrete bumpers. Other retaining methods can be used. It is also important to have a fire extinguisher available at the refueling station. Moreover, anybody who is operating the fueling station should be trained and also needs to be trained to safely and effectively utilize the fire extinguisher. When it comes to the fuel aspect, safety is of utmost importance.
Operator Training
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration requires that all operators utilizing a lift truck must be properly trained. This training includes a classroom portion as well as hands-on training. After the training sessions have been completed, the individual should be tested in order to show that they understand the training materials. A portion of this training also includes the proper way of the refueling process of the forklift. The training also involves site-specific procedures and the precautions involved for the refueling of any unit they could be driving.
Medical Treatment
MSDS or Material Safety Data Sheets should be situated inside all facilities where lift trucks are operating. This center will include the MSDSs for all chemicals and solvents which are utilized on site. This will also include the acid in the lift truck battery, together with the propane that is used to refuel the unit.
MSDSs sheets need to be available for all employees all the time. If any exposure incident happens for instance, the person has to be evaluated at once. If any medical attention is needed, to must be given without any delay. Generally, if you are uncertain if medical care is needed, as a general rule; have the injury examined by a doctor if you fear it is severe. Always better to be safe than sorry.
